Examples include Detroit - 33,500 houses and 12,000 vacant lots; Baltimore 14,000 abandoned houses and 91,000 residential lots; Philadelphia 40,000 abandoned houses and lots. Cities lose millions of dollars and others such as Chicago lose billions in revenue due to abandoned properties.
Cities grappling with abandoned properties and vacancies have instituted various programs to abate blight.
Data Development - GIS Geographic Information System) to provide data to help make decisions. Tracking abandoned properties also demands a data system which can provide information to enable decision making regarding vacant property.
Scavenger Sale - In Chicago Cook County, Illinois every two years the city holds a scavenger sales for abandoned property owned by the City.
Land Bank - It may take a number of years to acquire properties via foreclose for non-payment of property taxes.
